I found these old pictures from a run we did way back before the CanyonStrafers were born. Our destination was the Stewart's Point and Skagg's Springs Road a few hours north of San Francisco along beautiful Hwy 1 (aka Pacific Coast Highway)
We met in San Bruno, just south of San Francisco, at 8am and headed up Hwy 280, through SF on 19th Street and then across the famous Golden Gate Bridge. From there we took Hwy 1 towards Point Reyes, Stinson Beach, and Bodega Bay. The sun was out and the coast was free of fog. Hwy 1 north of San Francisco is one of the most beautiful and scenic drives in California. The first time I had been up there the coast was shrouded in fog. This time the weather was perfect and I got to see the ocean and cliffs that I had missed the first time out.
We stopped in Bodega Bay for an early lunch then headed up towards Stewart's Point. From Stewart's Point we headed east on Skagg's Springs Road. Skagg's starts out as a thin winding mountain road similar to the little backroads in the Santa Cruz mountains. This continues on for about 15 miles, then it opens up to a wide track quality road with huge sweepers going up, down, and around the surrounding hills. Skagg's then drops you down near the Lake Sonoma Resevoir and then continues on till you eventually hit 101 a few miles north of Santa Rosa.
The ride home was pretty boring as it we were on the freeway the rest of the way home. But it was fun for all! If you haven't been up to Skagg's Springs Road you owe it to yourself to ride it at least once.
