AMA Weekend @ Sears Point Raceway - May 3-5, 2003

Write up by Andy Carman

welcome to the nationals, eh ? i'm fine, just a
couple of scrapes and bruises. the bike also seems
not too bad, but the helmet gave it's life.

when i passed that guy i noticed his leathers said
'clash king', so i was glad to be past. started 32,
made it to 19th after the first lap with siglin and a
couple of other people to pass just ahead. just as i
tipped it in to T1 i felt i was in a nose wheelie and
felt like the rear was hooked to another bike. i
thought, so this is what it feels like to be rear
ended. i steered with it and tried to get
disconnected from the other bike but no luck. it
seemed like this went on for a couple of seconds, but
it was probably less before i got pitched. i think i
saw the ground-sky loop about 5-6 times. i thought i
got up immediately but i dunno. i don't know if
anything would have helped, but next time i'm hitting
the gas. that, and qualifying ahead of the bozos, or
send in your entry early ala ccs.

what i heard is basically just some amatuer panic braking/crashing. kinda silly in the ama. i wonder how long the guy(#151/Wait) has had an expert roadracing license. Nathan "Gator" Wait, brother or cousin to Matt Wait out of the Lodi/ Modesto area (spelled lots of flat track and no front brake experience)

here's what someone else reported:

<<<It happened very quickly, but from what I saw of the incident, it
looked like the guy on the green bike may have braked too hard/abruptly and
lost the front end immediately upon hitting them. The green bike was
on the pavement, with sparks flying, long before it made contact with
Andy. The bike slid along and just as Andy was starting to turn his
bike into Turn 1, the sliding bike slammed into his rear wheel and
basically high centered him off his bike. It was like a bowling ball taking
out a bowling pin. I was really glad to see Andy get up and walk over
to the wall, as he did lay on the ground in the dirt outside of Turn 1,
for what seemed like about 30 seconds before he actually began to get up.>>>

anyhow, can't get rid of me that easy, cya at TH.

The Speed Channel cameras were not able to film the actual contact but they got good footage of the tumble.

Pics

Crash damage. A new pipe, new plastics, right side clip-on and new fairing stay and he's back in business. The other bike, it looked worse from the other side when they rolled it past.
